The Lawyer Dr. Abdul Salam Cheaib
Overview of his life

  • He was born in Saida in 1937.
  • He received his elementary and complementary education at the American Evangelical School in Saida, then he pursued his secondary studies at the International College (IC) in Beirut.
  • He obtained the Suffomor Diploma- Arts from the American University in Beirut.

Scientific Diplomas

  • Bachelor’s degree in law (Faculty of Law at the Lebanese University) in 1961.
  • Diploma in the American law and the compared law from the Colombian University- Leiden in 1963.
  • PHD in law from the University of Sorbonne in Paris in 1965 with very good rank.

Activities

  • Activist since his secondary studies in the public field where he advocated the student movement in 1961 then he was the first President of the Association of the Law Faculty Students at the Lebanese University and the Secretary of the National Union of Lebnaese Students, as well as he supported the National Liberation Movement and the Palestinian Cause, particularly, recently when the aggression occurred on Gaza.
  • As well as the missing persons issues that he represented and the Lebanese Government in Geneva and he still works for them.

Academic Careers

  • Professor in the Faculty of Law, Political and Administrative Sciences at the Lebanese University since 1965 where he lectured in the courses of private law, such as the Labor Code and Social Security, Business Law, laws history, Code of Commerce and Civil Law, and he currently supervises the Doctorate theses in the private law courses, the Civil Law, the Business Law and the Labor Code.
  • A Lecturer Professor in the Faculty of Business Administration and Economy at the Lebanese University from 1976 till 1981.
  • He worked as a Superviser Professor of the examinations in the courses of the Lebanese Law at each of Saint Joseph University and Arab University between 1966 and 1973.
  • Vice-President of the International Academic National Committee of the compared law since 2001 for several years.
  • A member of the High Council of the Lebanese and International Arbitration since 1998 and for many years.
  • Member of the Legal Institution for Surveys, Consultations and Arbitration in 2008.
  • Vice-President of the National Authority related to the drawing up of the election law in Lebanon and the electoral reform in 2006-2007.

Current Vocational National Activities

  • The President of the Defense Committee of Public Liberties and Human Rights at the Bar of Beirut since 1996 up to date.
  • Currently, he supervises the Master and Doctorate theses in the private law and business law in the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences at the Lebanese University and other private Universities Faculties.
  • His last discussion of the Doctorate theses that he supervised was titled “Development of the labor contract in the light of the globalization”. A compared study with both French and Egyptian Labor Codes in 2012 for the Professor Rouba El Haidari, the concept development of the employer authority within the framework of the recent technology for the Professor Jamile Abdul Nour Harb in 2015, and the disclosure of private interests in the joint stock companies listed in the Stock Market in 2016.

Previous careers and activities

  • A Former Adviser to the Council of Ministries Presidency for the Administrative Reform 1973-1977.
  • A member of the Supreme Authority of the Administrative Reform between 1974-1976.
  • A Former Legal and Administrative Adviser for each of both Ministries of Finance and Labor for periods and since 1980-1990.
  • A Former President of the Disciplinary Council at the Bar of Beirut 1992-1994.
  • A Member of the Committee of Unifying and Updating Laws at the Ministry of Justice between 1992-1998.
  • A Member of the National Authority for Missing Persons during the war 2000-2003.
  • He participated with the Committee of Administration and Justice in the Parliament to draw up the project of the new Penal Procedure Code in 2000.
  • He represented Lebanon before the Supreme Commission for Human Rights-United Nations in Geneva in 2001 regarding the missing persons in Lebanon.
  • Vice-President of the National Authority for the Electoral Reform in 2006 which was presided over by the Minister Fouad Boutros.

  • Judges and Litigants guarantees-A lecture given at Unesco during “Justice Conference and Keeping up with times” drawn up by the Ministry of Justice in 2001.
